Notes and Errata

  • I’ve been meaning to add subscribe-by-email functionality to the blog for awhile now. Reader B-Daddy logged a feature request for it via comments, so I figured it was about time. So now you can click the link just above the text box to subscribe via comments. It was initially a check box plus link, but for some reason the check box isn’t reading the email form correctly. I’ll be tinkering with it over the next few days, so please be patient and let me know if it gives you any grief.
  • As someone who can rarely resist reading YouTube comments and who almost always regrets doing so, this looks like a very useful browser plugin.

*Sounds of hammering and sawing*

I’m tinkering with the blog a bit, so if various features disappear, break, or act wonky for awhile, I’m probably to blame.

As proactive recompense, here’s a video of a shrimp running a tread mill accompanied by Boots Randolph on the saxophone:

I love the Internet.

Blog.Sleep()

In light of the fact that I am both on call this week and also trying to move apartments, I won’t be posting here until sometime (probably late) next week. I leave you in the capable hands of Mr. Tom Waits:

“Black Market Baby” from the incredible Mule Variations album.

Swatting Cobwebs Out of the Corners

A few items to tide you over while I, Frankenstein-like, resurrect the blogs from a week of death.

1.) I’m back in the States. My trip to the UK was amazing. We stayed in London, with a few day-trips. There will be a full write-up, with pictures, in the near future. In the meantime, just trust that it was awesome.

2.) There’s nothing quite like meeting up with old friends. I saw my friend Lauren for the first time in 6 years. In the meantime she’s both gotten married and become Dr. Lauren. But we still related just as easily as we did back in our college days. We also met up with one of Annie’s friends from her travels and had a grand time drinking in a tapas bar near King’s Cross. Good times.

3.) This song is so good it hurts. I love John Darnielle so much.

4.) When I got back to work this morning, my email inbox contained over 3800 items. And thats with things heavily filtered to discard a lot of the kruft. So that was pretty much my entire Monday.

More later. For now, I play an epic game of Catch Up.

New Rules

Via my wonderful friend Heather comes the following list of rules:

Magic Blue Smoke is hearby adopting Rules #2 and #7 from the above. Please refer to the sidebar for the updated list of house rules.

Thank you for your consideration and patronage.

UPDATE: After much consideration by the management, both rules #2 and #7 shall be adopted.

Content Stand In

I think everyone who does any kind of creative work, even something so banal as this blog, needs someone to act as a “hey, is this any good?” filter. Mine, quite rightly, pointed out that the post I had drafted for tonight needs more work.

So in the meantime, here’s an awesome Essential Mix from Drum and Bass mastermind Danny Byrd:

“God does not need Abraham”

Sorry for the no blogging the past few days. I’ve had a few college friends in town, and have spent my time catching up with them as well as doing my fair share of drinking, carousing, etc.

Content volume should pick up tomorrow. In the meantime, this song wrecks me. Ethereally beautiful, heartbreaking, lush, perfect:

EDIT: Looks like the embedding widget is broke. Grooveshark link.

“The planets in the heavens are perfectly aligned”

Upgrading WordPress shortly. It will either go entirely smoothly or completely wreck the blog. On the off-chance that it works, enjoy this awesome tune by The Mountain Goats:

“Evolution is a process too slow to save my [blog]”

Okay, so it became pretty apparent that the multiple, topic-specific blog thing flat wasn’t working. There wasn’t enough time nor energy in my day to keep all of them alive at once. As a result, I am henceforth merging my music and general blogs into my code blog.

Why merge them into the code blog?

Honestly: because I like the URL the best.

And no, I’m not kidding.

As a result, this blog with now contain my Internet writings on, well, everything. A short, but woefully incompletely topic list:

  • Music
  • Books
  • Science
  • Philosophy
  • Politics
  • Firearms
  • Coding
  • Video Games
  • Autobiography
  • General Nerdery

So please stick around. Update your feed readers and book marks. And settle in for what may be a wild ride, but will probably just be an exceedingly odd one.
